IMATA Hurricane Relief Fund: An Overview

What is IMATA’s 2017 Hurricane Relief Fund?

In the autumn of 2017, IMATA accepted donations to seed a hurricane relief fund to benefit zoological professionals affected by Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma, and Hurricane Maria. The program’s goal is to fund subsidized IMATA membership for those affected by these named storms.

Who is eligible?

Program eligibility is based primarily on the applicant’s place of residence/place of employment at the time of hurricane landfall(s). As such, the following geographic regions have been set as criteria for eligibility:

Hurricane Harvey (25-29 August 2017)

Guyana, Suriname, specific Texas areas (Aransas County, Bay City, Beaumont-Port Arthur area, Conroe, Corpus Christi metropolitan area, Rockport, Houston metropolitan area, Victoria) and specific Louisiana parishes (Acadia & Calcasieu).

Hurricane Irma (31 August-11 September 2017)

Anguilla, Antigua, Bahamas,Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Cuba, Hispaniola, islands of Lesser Antilles, Puerto Rico, Saint Barthélemy, Saint Martin, U.S. Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands, and the following counties in Florida (Broward, Collier, Duval, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands, Hillsborough, Lake, Lee, Leon, Liberty, Manatee, Marion, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Nassau, Okeechobee, Orange, Palm Beach, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Seminole, St. Johns, St. Lucie, Taylor).

Hurricane Maria (17-28 September 2017)

Dominica, Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Haiti, islands of the Lesser Antilles, Martinique, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and U.S. Virgin Islands.

Relief is available to any eligible zoological professional working with any taxa, including those individuals who may have an existing IMATA membership.

How do the membership subsidies work?

IMATA Member Applicants

Applicants who maintained IMATA membership between 25 August 2017 and present may qualify to receive a fully subsidized 12-month IMATA membership at their most recent membership status level. 

Approved applicants with an existing IMATA membership in good standing at the time of approval will receive a 12-month extension to their existing membership at their current membership level.

IMATA Non-member Applicants

Applicants who have not maintained IMATA membership between 25 August 2017 and present may qualify to receive a 50% subsidized (12-month) IMATA membership at the Associate level.

How do I apply for a subsidized membership?

Individuals must submit an electronic application for relief via an online tool on IMATA’s website via THIS LINK.

How long do I have to apply?

The application window will close at 11:59PM EST on 31 August 2018. All applications must be completed and submitted by this time; late applications will not be considered.

When will I know if my application has been approved or denied?

The application review process is expected to take between four and six weeks; the goal is to have all applicants notified of their application status no later than 15 September 2018.
