Tembeling spent the first 24 years of his life at CMZ with keepers he knew well. Tembeling was partially hand-reared due to his mother's passing, his father’s Species Survival Plan transfer, and an injury that occurred at the age of 2 months resulting in the amputation of his left hand up to the wrist joint, all before the age of 1.5 years.
