Seminar: How Do Otters Solve Food Puzzles Over Time?Exploring American Humane’s Global Initiatives for Animal Welfare in Zoos and Beyond

17 July 2025

3:00 PM CST

Seminar Description:

ManyOtters, a big-team science group, has been created to learn more about the cognitive and behavioral worlds of otters of different species. Our first project is examining problem solving strategies exhibited by otters interacting with novel foraging puzzles and how they retain those strategies after 2 months of no exposure. We will share the results of our pilot project with three species of river otters along with an update on the progress of our current ManyOtters project.

Presenter Bio:

Dr. Heather Hill, a Professor of Psychology at St. Mary’s University, San Antonio, TX, earned her Ph.D. in experimental psychology with emphases in development, cognition, and marine mammal behavior from the University of Southern Mississippi. The first 10 years of her marine mammal career involved research on the mother-calf relationship and social development of bottlenose dolphins in human care. In 2007, she added belugas to this research line, and killer whales in 2010. Since 1997, Dr. Hill has conducted a variety of cognitive projects involving discriminations of familiar and unfamiliar stimuli, mirror use, creativity, symbol transfer, problem solving, and perceptions of emotions with large and small dolphins, belugas, sea lions, otters, penguins, dogs, and young and less young humans. Dr. Hill has had the distinct privilege of collaborating with many facilities and scientists in the US and around the world.
