On 15 December 2022 the Taronga Conservation Society welcomed a new addition to its long-nosed or New Zealand fur seal colony. The male pup, yet to be named, was born to dam Keke and sire Bondi. This is the second pup from this pairing. Their first pup, Birubi, was born in December 2020 and was the first long-nosed fur seal born at Taronga in more than 20 years. At 18 months old, Birubi recently relocated to Sea Life Sunshine Coast Aquarium where she has settled in extremely well and now lives alongside other long-nosed fur seals.

Another new addition, Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea) April, arrived on loan in October from Sea Life Sunshine Coast for breeding purposes with Taronga’s bull Charlie. If April and Charlie are successful, they will support the regional breeding program for this endangered species. Charlie has proven himself as a successful sire, and his previous offspring have relocated to other facilities.
